New West Pride Week

New West Pride Week 2018

Diversity has been present in the world since the beginning of time. Some periods of history embraced diversity and others despised diversity which is, in itself, an aspect of the diversity of Hate and Love.

On June 28, 1969, the cause for diversity reared its head in New York City’s Stonewall Inn when the Inn was raided by police.

“The true legacy of the Stonewall riots is the ongoing struggle for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality. While the fight…has won many significant victories, most of them flowing from those six days in the summer of 1969 when gay people found the courage to stand up for themselves…”

In 1978, Harvey Milk, stated: “On this anniversary of Stonewall, I ask my gay sisters and brothers to make the commitment to fight. For themselves, for their freedom, for their country … We will not win our rights by staying quietly in our closets … We are coming out to fight the lies, the myths, the distortions. We are coming out to tell the truths about gays, for I am tired of the conspiracy of silence, so I’m going to talk about it. And I want you to talk about it. You must come out. Come out to your parents, your relatives.”

In 2010, a group of New Westminster citizens under the leadership of Vance McFadyen formed the Royal City Pride Society and with unanimous approval by New Westminster City Council, launched the first Pride Event in Tipperary Park on August 7.

New West Pride (Royal City Pride Society) aims to promote equality and diversity through all of its events. Our Pride festivities uses theatre, music, debate, art and entertainment to raise awareness of discrimination and the issues and difficulties affecting the lives of Gay Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, Transgender/Transsexual, Queer and Inter-sex people in New Westminster and around the world. We celebrate the diversity of our GLBTQ+ community by all we do. Through this we aim to promote a sentiment in favor of equality, uniting people in a celebratory atmosphere where all are welcome, and fostering a sense of community within the GLBTQ+ population. Overall, New West Pride hopes to promote understanding and cooperation, as well as education in diversity, in order to get rid of the discrimination faced by GLBTQ+ people.

New West Pride is a zero waste festival and we continue to be fully accessible.

The New West Grand Prix

The New West Grand Prix is an international professional cycling race taking place in historic downtown New Westminster. Piva Modern Italian is proud to be the official VIP Tent sponsor.

The New West Grand Prix is a member of BC Superweek, one of the most prestigious cycling events in North America. The criterium-style race features a mass start and a 935-meter circuit that cyclists navigate for an expected 45-55 laps. More than 200 male and female cyclists will pass by every minute, making the New West Grand Prix a thrilling spectator experience. We are excited to host some of the best riders from around the world with over 13 different nationalities represented.
