About Jennifer Scott
Jennifer Scott is a Vancouver-born vocalist and jazz pianist specializing in jazz, blues and world music. Jennifer is considered one of the most important jazz artists working in Canada and the United States today. From sold-out concerts in San Francisco to exclusive local club performances, Jennifer’s performance experiences have been varied.
Jennifer has appeared at Jazz Festivals all across Canada and the United States. She has also appeared with such jazz luminaries as: Tommy Banks, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler, Skywalk, Clark Terry, Jon Batiste and Gene Bertoncini, to name a few. Jennifer Scott has appeared on Jazzbeat, Westcoast Performance, and CBC’s Hot Air several times, and was selected to be featured on four separate CDs produced by the CBC. She has also appeared on several TV shows as a featured performer, and appeared at the prestigious Monterey Jazz Festival
Jennifer is in demand as a performer and educator/clinician both in the United States and Canada, teaching and creating workshops and college courses.
About Frazey Ford
Vancouver-based Soul-Americana artist Frazey Ford released her critically acclaimed album U kin B the Sun via the Arts & Crafts label on February 7, 2020. Ford is a founding member of the seminal folk band The Be Good Tanyas.
She has previously released two critically acclaimed solo albums, including her 2014 album “Indian Ocean” which made the Polaris Prize long list and was nominated for a Juno in 2015 in the best roots album category. This album was recorded with Al Green’s band, The Hi Rhythm Section, the iconic architects of the Memphis soul sound. It was named one of the top releases of 2014, an acclaimed country soul gem inviting comparisons to Cat Power’s The Greatest. The video for Frazey’s song Done from this album has captured over 2.5 million view on YouTube and still counting.
Her latest album has garnered incredible international reviews. At turns ecstatic and heavy-hearted, gloriously shambolic, and deeply purifying, U kin Be the Sun has been praised as “her best yet” (The Times) for its “dramatic and rather dazzling” (Uncut) blend of Ford’s mesmerizing vocals and percussion-soaked grooves. Performing live, Frazey Ford is a captivating presence supported by the intoxicating lilt of her band. Brad Turner
Trumpeter, pianist, drummer and composer Brad Turner is one of Canada’s most highly esteemed jazz musicians. Brad has performed and/or recorded with such artists as Joe Lovano, Ingrid Jensen, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, PJ Perry, John Scofield, Lewis Nash, Reneé Rosnes, Peggy Lee, Mike Murley, Seamus Blake, Steve Davis, Russell Malone, Terri Lynne Carrington, and Scott Robinson. As a leader, Brad has released thirteen albums, ten as a trumpeter, and
three as a pianist with his trio. Four of those releases were recognized with Juno Award nominations. Brad is a three time Juno Award winner, as co-leader of the electric jazz group Metalwood. Brad teaches as a member of the jazz studies faculty at Capilano University in North Vancouver, B.C.
Darren Radtke has long been a member of Vancouver’s music community, working as a bassist/guitarist and educator, and as a composer for Next Level Games and Nintendo. He has had the pleasure of collaborating with and learning from some of this country’s greatest musicians, two of whom are Brad Turner and Bernie Arai. Darren and his wife have been proud residents of New Westminster since 2004.
Bernie Arai’s musical career as a performer, educator, composer and recording artist spans styles through jazz, improvised music, traditional Japanese, and electronic and computer music. On drum set, percussion and electronics, he works with some of Canada’s most accomplished musicians. Born, raised and based in Vancouver, Bernie has performed across the country with various ensembles, and has also toured across the United States, Japan and Europe. He remains in demand as an accompanist and band member for many legendary musicians from across Canada and around the world, appearing in concert at numerous music festivals worldwide, and on CBC radio jazz shows.
Brad Turner Trio
The Brad Turner Trio (Brad Turner, piano; Darren Radtke, bass; Bernie Arai, drums) has been a mainstay on the Vancouver jazz scene since it’s inception in 1997. Drawing from a large repertoire of original compositions and interpretations of standard tunes, this group is an exciting and highly interactive unit, exploring varied musical avenues, from free improvisation to structured composition and groove based themes. Between them, the members of the band have worked and/or recorded with (among others) Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, Gary Bartz, Ingrid Jensen, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, Cedar Walton, Joanne Brakeen, Renee Rosnes, and John Scofield among others.
Jack Duncan has a long and storied career in music. He perfected his percussive art through studies with master drummers Dou Dou N’Diaye Rose and Petit Toure in West Africa, and AfroCuban music in Cuba. He has performed with such luminaries as Chucho Valdes, Arturo Sandoval, J.J. Johnson and many others. He is a JUNO award winner, with work on over 60 albums, and a major musical contributor to the Oscar and Grammy winning feature film, “Ratatouille”. Jack Duncan makes the trio a quartet for this event.
Piva presents: Jazz at the Anvil celebrates local, talented musicians from the Metro Vancouver area. The goal of these shows is to both elevate the appreciation of jazz, but also to engage, strengthen, and amplify arts in the community. Piva is also passionate about supporting the community: proceeds from these events go to New Westminster charities.

Tom Keenlyside is an extraordinarily gifted musician who has graced the stage and studio with some of the most iconic international artists of the 20th century and beyond. His talent on saxophone, flute and clarinet has made him a sought after studio player and producer as well. Anyone who has the good fortune to hear him play live will be exquisitely mesmerized by the depth of his talent.
About Angela Kelman
After graduating with honours from Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles, Angela became the lead singer and a principal writer for Farmer’s Daughter. The group enjoyed major Canadian success with Gold albums, CMT videos, TV appearances, and multiple Juno, CCMA, and BCCMA Awards. Angela is also a respected vocal coach and author of “The 5 Point Singing System” and a Children’s Sing-Along books series. In her spare time, she continues to gig with her dream retro band, The Polyester Philharmonic and Café Brasilia/Casa Do Samba Experience quartette.
About Marcus Mosely
Marcus has sung throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific and Australia. From Ralls, Texas, Marcus made Vancouver his home in 1985. Since then he has starred in the stage productions Ain’t Misbehavin’, Black and Gold Revue (Arts Club), and Show Boat. He also created and directed It’s Time to Sing (Arts Club). In the studio, he has worked with Jim Byrnes, Colin James and appeared in the movie Twist of Faith and in Holiday Heart as the voice of Ving Rhames. His was the singing voice of Fluttershy in an episode of the series My Little Pony. He is also a member of the award winning Sojourners (2014 Spiritual Album of the Year) who opened for Bobby McFerrin at the 2014 Vancouver Jazz Festival. In 2011 he founded the Marcus Mosely Chorale (which performed regularly at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, Yule Duel, Festival of Trees in W. Vancouver, Vancouver Art Galley “Out for Lunch” series). In 2016, Marcus was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame and in 2017 his CD “Labour of Love” was released. In 2017, Marcus founded the Marcus Mosely Ensemble;
The Marcus Mosely Ensemble was created by Marcus Mosely in 2017, to bring an authentic gospel sound to British Columbia. The Ensemble performs in the lower mainland and has also travelled to smaller communities. The Ensemble’s style is African American Gospel, fused with soul & jazz, featuring original compositions and arrangements. Many voices….one song, all culminating in joy!
During the Pandemic year, (2020), Marcus did voice over work for Big Bad Boo Studios in which he starred as “Kenny” in their production “ABC’s with Kenny G” . This production won a Leo Award for the musical score and Marcus was nominated for a Leo for best vocal performance in an animated series.
It was also in 2020 that Marcus received the 2020 Legacy Award for outstanding achievement in Music from the National Congress of Black Women Foundation.
In May, 2024, Marcus was awarded the BC Achievement Foundation’s Community Award and the Mitchell Award of Distinction, which recognizes those who have demonstrated an “unwavering commitment to elevating people around them” via work or volunteer activities.

Tom Keenlyside, whose career has spanned five decades, has performed and recorded with a wide variety of international artists, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Natalie Cole, Aerosmith, Mel Torme, Van Halen, Diana Krall, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, to name a few. He has earned a star on the BC Entertainment Hall Of Fame Walk.
Miles Black (piano) is one of Canada’s foremost pianists, and has performed and recorded with the best. Just some of the artists and acts with whom Miles has worked with include Mark Murphy, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, George Coleman, Scott Hamilton, Sheila Jordan, Chuck Israels, Dee Daniels, Paul Horn, Skywalk, Max Roach, Harry “Sweets” Edison and Maynard Ferguson. He is featured on Keenlyside’s albums “Fortune Teller” and “A Night At The Espresso”
Miles Hill (bass) is a consummmate musician, who performs extensively with Van Morrison and Brazilian superstar Ivan Lins. His bass playing is constantly in demand, both in Canada and the USA, but also in Europe and South America. As a recording engineer, Miles was instrumental in mixing the music for the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Bernie Arai (drums), He remains in demand as an accompanist and band member for many legendary musicians from across Canada and around the world, appearing in concert at numerous music festivals worldwide, and on CBC radio jazz shows. He works with many of the country’s finest musicians as a member of ensembles such as: the Brad Turner Trio, Bill Coon’s bc double quartet, The Hard Rubber Orchestra, Sharon Minemoto Quintet and JUNO nominated Altered Laws.
Jim Byrnes, born in St. Louis, Missouri—blues country—has been on the blues highway for over 45 years. Raised on the north side, he was immersed in music from an early age, performing professionally by age thirteen. Byrnes moved to Vancouver in the mid-70s, forming the Jim Byrnes Band in 1981, which became a local staple. Despite a serious car accident in 1972, Byrnes’ passion for music endured. His evocative, smoky vocals and collaborations with producer Steve Dawson have led to multiple acclaimed albums, including the Juno-winning House of Refuge.
Jim has also built a notable acting career, with roles in series like Wiseguy and Highlander. Despite his success on screen, his first love remains the blues, a genre he continues to explore and celebrate through his music. From blues to gospel, and even country, Byrnes’ work reflects a deep respect for musical traditions, always delivered with heartfelt authenticity. Whether performing in intimate clubs or international stages, Jim Byrnes remains a living musical treasure.
The R&B Allstars formed in the late 70’s as a testament to our love of Classic R+B. The original band, with signature white tuxedos, first opened for Long John Baldry at Ohara’s. At this gig, the band was seen by Harry Brandolini, of No. 5 Orange, and he had an idea that the Allstars and the “5” would be a great weekend fit. Harry hired us, and the line-ups began, as did the curiosity. We were featured on local news, radio and TV shows. Many write-ups by people such as Tom Harrison only helped our popularity.
We soon became a fixture in the Vancouver nightlife scene, and also opened for touring acts that came to town. Many Jazz and Blues festivals followed. We were a fixture on Whistler long weekend holidays at Buffalo Bills. The Allstars recordings include Choo Choo Choo Boogie, Ain’t that a lot Of Love, Crazy Mama, Satisfaction, and an original, You’ve Got to Make up Your Mind. With great support from local radio, the band created a following that has endured for the past 40 years. More than 30 members have come and gone, including some of the best Vancouver talent.
The R&B Allstars is a dynamic 10-piece rhythm and blues band, celebrating their 41st
year on the Vancouver music scene. Formed in 1979, the band gained popularity playing venues such as the iconic Town Pump, the Commodore, Richards on Richards, 86th Street as well as being a regular feature at Whistler’s Buffalo Bills. The band enjoyed great radio support in the early years having recorded many singles and a live album, Live at the Five, which is where it all started. More recently the band recorded a CD/DVD set at the Hard Rock Casino.
Recently, the powerful vocals of Nathen Aswell were added to those of Joani Bye, with vocal augmentation by Billy Mendoza, Peter Juric and Tim Porter. The funky powerhouse rhythm section features Tim Porter’s searing guitar stylings, Billy Mendoza pounding the
bass, keyboard wizard Bill Sample and Rick Hilliam (tenor sax), Peter Juric (trumpet), Colin Weinmaster (trombone) and Bill Abbott (alto sax) form the outstanding “brass kicking ass” horn section.
The Allstars always enjoy reconnecting with their loyal fans of many years and finding new ones along the way.
Dave Brubeck’s enduring 1959 album “Time Out” is an American sonic masterpiece, and resonates to this day. The shifting time changes and melodic and harmonic beauty of his quartet’s work sound as fresh today as they did then. Paul Desmond’s poetic alto saxophone is iconic; blended together with Dave’s muscular piano playing and the driving rhythm section of Eugene Wright, bass, and Joe Morello, drums, the musical totality is flawless. Keenlyside’s quartet will play the entire album live, along with other Brubeck gems.

Erez’s sound is passionately Middle Eastern, blended with inspiration from flamenco and jazz. Erez has a number of award wins and nominations under his belt–the most recent of those from the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Known as “the hardest working man in Jazz,” Weeds is a fixture on the local music scene. This Juno-winner will be taking nods from Horace Silver, known as the father of hard-bop piano. Silver recorded music prior to the 1960s that was released well before its time.

Originally formed in 1991, by Boying Geronimo and now headed by his son, Raphael Geronimo, Rumba Calzada has been a favourite with Vancouver’s Latin Jazz and Salsa enthusiasts for over 25 years. Their CD, Volume 3 has been nominated for various awards including a 2002 Westcoast Music Award, a 2002 Canadian Independent Music Award, and a 2003 Juno Award.
Their 2007 release, Rumba Calzada Album 4, was nominated for a 2008 Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding World Recording of the Year. In 2008 the band performed at the Borneo Jazz Festival, in Sarawak, Malaysia and was voted the “crowd favourite” to return in 2009.

The first time I heard the Irakere album ‘Misa Negra’ (Black Mass) it absolutely blew my mind. The combination of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz harmonies lit a fire within me that continues to burn to this day. Not even in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that 15 years later Chucho Valdés, the leader of Irakere, would invite me to perform as a featured artists at the Havana Jazz Plaza. — Jack Duncan
Like a spiced rum and salsa on the beach, and influenced by the cultural and musical flavours of Havana — Jack Duncan invites you in to an island vibe. He is recognized internationally for his work as a pioneer in the study and promotion of Afro-Cuban and African music. Jack, alongside his Afro-Cuban Jazz group Conga Cartel, will create a vibrant landscape of sound and emotion through his Conga drums.
Jack has appeared on numerous soundtracks, and most notably the Grammy and Oscar Award winning animated movie Ratatouille (Disney/Pixar).

I had the pleasure of meeting Ella when I went 5 nights in a row to hear her at the International Plaza when I was 18 years old! I was brazen enough to go backstage and have a conversation with her and I brought her flowers. She was shy, but gracious and very encouraging to a fledgling jazz singer. She was touched that I had come every single night to hear her.
Ella was a huge inspiration to me to be an improviser and a band leader. She was also a great role model to learn the songs of the American Songbook as written but to also interpret them in a way that was unique and personal. — Jennifer Scott

Rumba Calzada
Originally formed in 1991, by Boying Geronimo and now headed by his son, Raphael Geronimo, Rumba Calzada has been a favourite with Vancouver’s Latin Jazz and Salsa enthusiasts for over 25 years. Their CD, Volume 3 has been nominated for various awards including a 2002 Westcoast Music Award, a 2002 Canadian Independent Music Award, and a 2003 Juno Award.
Their 2007 release, Rumba Calzada Album 4, was nominated for a 2008 Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding World Recording of the Year. In 2008 the band performed at the Borneo Jazz Festival, in Sarawak, Malaysia and was voted the “crowd favourite” to return in 2009.

Cory Weeds
Often referred to as “the hardest-working man in Jazz business,” Cory Weeds is best known as the founder and owner of Cory Weeds’ Cellar Jazz Club, which ran in Vancouver for more than 14 years.
Weeds’ passion for the genre is evident: a saxophonist, he fine-tuned his craft at the University of North Texas and Capilano University.
Weeds has also recorded twenty albums as a leader, including his latest Home Cookin’ Just Coolin.’ Weeds also founded The Cellar Music Group, which has put out more than 350 recordings–and counting.
Weeds has also served as producer on more than 200 recordings. In 2017 Weeds celebrated a win at the 2017 Juno Awards when Metalwood won for Jazz Album of the Year: Group. He had other projects nominated in 2019 and 2023.
2023 has been a watershed year for Weeds and the label. In March 2023 Weeds and the label were awarded a Grammy for The Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra in the large ensemble category.
On the presentation front, Weeds has booked Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver since 2016. In addition to Frankie’s, Weeds presents music all over British Columbia, Canada and the US.

Itamar Erez
Erez’s music holds a depth and sensitivity that touches listeners deeply, blending the delicateness of Middle Eastern music, the freedom found in jazz and the passion of flamenco–this allows him to create a unique sound all his own.
Recipient of the 2014 ACUM Prize for Special Achievement in Jazz and the prestigious 2014 Landau Prize, he is an internationally renowned composer and guitarist. He has performed in a variety of venues across the globe, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and Schauspielhaus Leipzig in Germany.
Erez has released two CDs with The Adama Ensemble: “Desert Song” (2006) & “Hommage” (2010). His most recent CD “Mi Alegria” was released in June 2019. He performs internationally and gives workshops and masterclasses, and is also part of the guitar faculty at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music.

Angela Kelman
Kelman got her music scene start in Manitoba, later heading to Hollywood to study at the Musician’s Institute. After graduating from the program with honours, she returned to Canada, and ended up becoming the lead singer and principal writer for Farmer’s Daughter. This award-winning country group racked up Gold albums, Juno, CCMA and BCCMA Awards–all while touring extensively.
Kelman is also a teacher, perfecting “The 5 Point Singing System” that helps students perfect their singing craft in a straightforward, easy-to-understand way. She’s also created kids’ music and is an author of children’s books, too.
In the minimally existent spare time she has, Kelman performs at gigs with her dream bands: The Polyester Philharmonic–focusing on the 60s and 70s; her Café Brasilia Band featuring North American Pop with South American Style; and her Groovy Lounge Band featuring beloved songs from the 40’s to current day.
Says Kelman, “I’m proud of my ability to wear 6” platform heels, sing, dance and keep an audience engaged for 3 hours as well as anyone half my age, AND look fabulous doing it.”
